DAY 7 ROUND-UP: First finalists named as goalball and chess begin

Japan and Argentina became the first finalists at the IBSA World Games on day seven after emerging victorious in the women’s blind football semi finals.
Japan had to settle for a 1-0 penalty shootout win after a tight 0-0 draw with India in normal time, whilst Argentina stormed into the final with a convincing 3-0 win over Sweden. The women’s blind football final will be at 7pm on Monday, August 21, with tickets available online at www.ibsagames2023.co.uk/tickets.
Elsewhere on day seven, the men’s VI cricket began with England VI Men chasing down Australia VI Men 157 for eight, hitting 158 for four as they won by six wickets.
A thrilling encounter between Pakistan VI Men and India VI Men saw Pakistan win by 18 runs in a hotly-contested derby, hitting 187 for eight against their rivals’ 169 for seven.
India VI Women also won their opening fixture at the IBSA World Games, winning by eight wickets, 61 for two compared to Australia’s 59 for six.
Day one of Goalball at the IBSA World Games 2023 featured some very exciting and hard fought matches in both the women’s and men’s pools in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
USA’s women’s team stormed to a comfortable 10-0 victory over Germany, declaring in the second half with still over seven minutes left on the clock.
Other results saw both Great Britain’s men’s and women’s teams clinch victory in their first game on home turf, as the women’s team beat Australia 5-1, while the men’s overcame Egypt 7-5 in a tightly-fought contest.
Elsewhere, Germany’s men fought hard but conceded a number of long ball penalties leading to a 3-8 loss to South Korea, and Ukraine women were no match for the powerful Brazilian squad, losing 0-9 after a medical substitution.
The day’s other sports saw chess begin at Café Aroma at the University of Birmingham with games taking place from 3pm all this week.
In men’s blind football France booked their place in the quarter final after a 4-2 win over Spain in Group C, while over in Group D Iran picked up their first win of the Games – narrow 1-0 victory over Morocco – leapfrogging their counterparts into second place to book their spot in the quarter finals.
The final group game take place on Monday, before the quarter finals begin on Tuesday.
